JCI Kota Kinabalu is a chapter of young active citizens who develop leadership, build community and create positive change across Sabah.

Junior Chamber International (JCI) is a worldwide federation of young active citizens between the ages of 18 and 40, dedicated to creating positive change in their communities. Founded in 1915, JCI today spans more than 100 countries — and JCI Kota Kinabalu is the local chapter serving Sabah’s vibrant state capital.
As members, we develop leadership skills, build lifelong friendships, grow professionally and take action on the issues that matter most to our community — from social responsibility projects to entrepreneurship and personal development.
Guided by JCI’s “One Year to Lead” philosophy, members step into real leadership roles each year — gaining hands-on experience that turns ideas into measurable impact.

History of JCI Kota Kinabalu
Six decades of leadership, service and lasting impact in Sabah — from 1962 to today.
The Beginning
The idea of a Junior Chamber began in Jesselton (now Kota Kinabalu). The three founders closely associated with the first chapter were En. Fauzi Patel, Mr. John Hii and Mr. Michael Chen. Fauzi Patel, then with the Sabah Times, was inspired during a study tour to Australia hosted by the Nambour Junior Chamber, Queensland.
1st Organizational Meeting
Our very first organizational meeting was held on 1st July 1962.
Sponsored Chapters
Sponsored the formation of JCI Intan (1975), JCI Tanjung Aaru (1975) and JCI Penampang (1980).
Our Own Secretariat
Purchased our very own Secretariat — a permanent home for the chapter.
Hosted 6 National Conventions
Proudly hosted six National Conventions across the decades: 1978, 1982, 1996, 2005, 2015 and 2019.
2 National Presidents
Two of our members rose to lead nationally — JCI Sen. Melvin Kiandee (2000) and JCI Sen. Donald Stephens (2005).

A Line of Leaders Since 1962
More than sixty Local Organisation Presidents have guided JCI Kota Kinabalu since our founding — an unbroken legacy of young leaders serving Sabah, continuing today under our 2026 leadership.
Our Story
JCI Kota Kinabalu was founded in 1962 in what was then Jesselton, by three visionary young leaders — En. Fauzi Patel, Mr. John Hii and Mr. Michael Chen. Inspired during a study tour to Australia hosted by the Nambour Junior Chamber, Fauzi Patel brought the Junior Chamber idea home to Sabah.
Since our first organizational meeting on 1 July 1962, our chapter has gone on to sponsor three new chapters — JCI Intan, JCI Tanjung Aaru and JCI Penampang — and proudly hosted six National Conventions. In 1985 we purchased our own Secretariat, giving the chapter a permanent home.
Two of our members, JCI Sen. Melvin Kiandee (2000) and JCI Sen. Donald Stephens (2005), rose to serve as National Presidents. Today, JCI Kota Kinabalu remains one of Sabah's most active and award-winning chapters, continuing a legacy of leadership, service and impact that spans over sixty years.
